Does It Cost Anything to Open an Etsy Shop? The Honest Answer

Ask what it costs to open an Etsy shop and you get two confident answers, both wrong. One says it is free. The other says it is $15. Sellers who have actually been through onboarding recently tell a stranger story: one shop got charged, another did not, same person, same week.

Key takeaway: Etsy's binding Fees and Payments Policy says you may be required to pay a one-time set-up fee, names no amount anywhere, and says the fee may be waived at Etsy's sole discretion. If you are charged, the amount is shown to you during onboarding before you confirm it. Anyone quoting you a fixed figure is quoting an old announcement, not the policy.

The policy names a fee. It does not name a number.

What the policy actually says

The Fees and Payments Policy is the binding document, and it is worth reading its exact wording rather than a summary of it.

It says that to open your Etsy shop, you may be required to pay a one-time set-up fee, and that if applicable, the set-up fee will be displayed and charged as part of the shop set-up process. During onboarding, once you confirm the charge, Etsy initiates a pending transaction on your card, and that transaction is processed after onboarding is complete, your shop is open, and you are able to receive orders.

Three things follow from that, and none of them appear in the usual advice:

  • You will see the amount before you agree to it. It is not a surprise line on a later bill.
  • The charge does not land until your shop is actually open and able to take orders.
  • The fee is non-refundable once paid, and Etsy reserves the right to adjust or change it at its discretion.

The policy also says the fee may be waived, in certain circumstances or promotional periods, at Etsy's sole discretion. That single sentence explains every forum thread where one seller paid and another did not.

Why the $15 figure will not die

The $15 number is not invented. It comes from a February 2024 announcement that applied to some new shops. It was never a universal price and it is not in the current policy, which names no amount at all.

So when a guide tells you the fee is $15, or $19, or somewhere between $15 and $29, it is reporting either an old announcement or one person's experience. Neither is a price list.

"The honest answer to how much it is: Etsy will tell you during set-up, and it may be nothing."

One more caveat if you sell from outside the US. The set-up fee is listed exclusive of taxes, and depending on where your bank account is, you may be charged tax on that fee later, deducted from your sales.

The costs that are certain

The set-up fee is the uncertain one. Everything below is fixed and published, and it is where your money actually goes.

The recurring fees matter far more than the one you are worried about.

The listing fee has moving parts

Twenty cents sounds trivial until you understand when it repeats.

You are charged when you create a listing and when you renew one, but never for editing an existing listing. You are charged whether or not the item sells. Etsy.com listings expire after four months, and by default they auto-renew at $0.20 unless you switch the listing or the whole shop to Manual in Renewal Options. A listing with multiple quantities renews at $0.20 after each item sells. A private listing is the exception: you are only charged when it sells.

For a shop with 200 listings that mostly do not sell, that is $40 every four months in renewals alone. Deciding renewals deliberately is one of the few costs a new seller fully controls.

Offsite Ads is the fee to understand before you grow

This is the one that catches sellers out later, and the detail people get wrong is the threshold.

Etsy calculates it on your shop's sales over the prior 365 days, checked on the first of each month, not on lifetime sales. Under $10,000 you pay 15% on attributed orders, and you may opt out of Offsite Ads entirely. Once your shop reaches $10,000, the rate drops to 12%, participation becomes mandatory, and any earlier opt out stops applying. Etsy is blunt that this is permanent: if you later fall back below $10,000, you still pay 12% for the lifetime of your shop.

The one comfort is a ceiling. The total Offsite Ads fee on a single attributed order will not exceed $100.

Watch out: The Offsite Ads decision is one way only. The moment your shop reaches $10,000 over the prior 365 days, participation becomes mandatory at 12% for the lifetime of the shop, and any opt out you made earlier stops applying. Decide while you are still under the threshold.

Two ways the bill is smaller than you think

First, in-person sales. If you take payment with the Square reader, those sales are not subject to Etsy's 6.5% transaction fee or Etsy payment processing fees. You pay Square's fees instead. Listings you have not synced carry a $0.20 fee that shows up as a Square manual charge.

Second, keyword research. Every seller gets 15 free Marketplace Insights searches per week without paying for anything. Unlimited searches are one of the things an Etsy Plus subscription buys, alongside 15 listing credits shown as $3 of credit and $5 of Etsy Ads credit each cycle. Those credits expire at the end of the cycle and do not roll over, so an unused Etsy Plus month is $10 spent for nothing.

What comes out of each sale is the number to plan around.

What to do about it

  1. Go through onboarding and read the set-up screen. If a fee applies, the amount is shown before you confirm it.
  2. Budget for the first month as listing fees plus your first few renewals, not as a joining fee.
  3. Set new listings to Manual renewal until you know which ones sell.
  4. Decide about Offsite Ads while you are still under $10,000, because that is the only window in which opting out is available.
  5. Do not pay for keyword tools before you have used your 15 free Marketplace Insights searches each week.
  6. Remember that all Etsy service fees, including prepaid fees, are non-refundable. There is no undo.

If you want to know what a specific listing actually clears after every fee, ask Spryte to run the numbers on it so your price comes from your real margin.

Frequently asked questions

Does it cost anything to open an Etsy shop?

It may. Etsy's policy says you may be required to pay a one-time set-up fee, and that it may be waived at Etsy's sole discretion. The amount is displayed during shop set-up before you confirm it.

Is the Etsy set-up fee $15?

The current policy names no amount. The $15 figure comes from a February 2024 announcement that applied to some new shops, so it is not a reliable current price.

Why did my friend not get charged when I did?

Etsy says the fee may be waived in certain circumstances or promotional periods, at its sole discretion. Two shops opened days apart can be treated differently.

Is the set-up fee refundable?

No. The policy says the one-time set-up fee is non-refundable once paid, and that all service fees, including prepaid fees, are non-refundable.

Does Etsy charge a monthly fee?

Not for a standard shop. Etsy Plus is optional and costs $10 per month.

What does a sale actually cost me?

A $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee on item price plus shipping and gift wrap, and payment processing, which is 3% plus $0.25 for US bank accounts and varies by country.

When do I have to pay the 12% Offsite Ads rate?

Once your shop has made $10,000 or more over the prior 365 days, measured on the first of the month. After that it applies for the lifetime of your shop even if sales fall back below the threshold.

Do I need to pay for keyword research?

Not to start. Every seller gets 15 free Marketplace Insights searches per week. Unlimited searches come with Etsy Plus.
