Etsy Now Allows Three Variations. Almost Every Guide Still Says Two.

Etsy Now Allows Three Variations. Almost Every Guide Still Says Two.

For years the answer was two. Size and colour, or colour and material, and if you wanted a third dimension you built a second listing or a workaround. On 25 August 2026 Etsy changed it to three, and the change is live for every seller. Search for it today and you will still be told, confidently and repeatedly, that the limit is two.

Key takeaway: Etsy's own Help page now reads "You can add variations for up to 3 item attributes while creating or editing a listing." The third variation is real and available. The catch is that a three variation listing is capped at 2,500 option combinations instead of 4,900, and only 400 combinations can carry their own price, SKU or quantity.

What Etsy's own page says now

The sentence on Etsy's variations Help page is unambiguous. Variations are available for up to three item attributes while creating or editing a listing, and Etsy suggests separating choices like size, colour and style into distinct variations rather than combining them into one.

The feature had a slow road. Etsy announced it, then paused it on 26 May 2026 while it reconsidered how the third variation would be enabled, then shipped it to all sellers through the Open API on 25 August 2026. That gap is a large part of why the guidance you can find has not moved. A page written in June was correct when it was written.

Which means, for a short while, this is one of the rare cases where knowing the current rule is itself an advantage. Your competitors are reading the same wrong articles you were.

The limit that actually bites

Here is where it gets interesting, and where almost nobody has followed the story. Adding a third variation costs you headroom in two different ways, and the second one is the one that will catch you out.

Source: Etsy Help, How to Add Variations to Your Listings, and the Etsy Open API 3 Variation Listings Launch announcement, 25 August 2026. An option combination is one unique version of your item: 10 sizes times 25 colours times 10 materials is 2,500 combinations.

Watch out: You can build a listing with 2,500 combinations and be unable to price 2,100 of them. The 400 cap on unique prices, SKUs and quantities is the real constraint, and it is not a three variation limit. It has been there all along, quietly, and adding a third dimension is what makes most sellers finally collide with it.

The 70 option figure is not Etsy's number

While checking this, one claim kept turning up across multiple guides: that Etsy allows a maximum of 70 total options across your variation types. One of those pages describes the figure as documented in Etsy's official seller help centre.

It is not. That number appears nowhere on Etsy's variations Help page. We are flagging it plainly rather than repeating it in passing, because a debunk that quotes a wrong number without saying it is wrong tends to spread the number further. If you have been designing listings around a 70 option ceiling, the ceiling you were designing around does not exist. The real ones are 4,900, 2,500 and 400.

"The limits that constrain your listing are the ones Etsy publishes, not the ones the top search result repeats."

How to use the third variation without hitting a wall

The temptation, the moment a constraint lifts, is to use all of it. Resist that. A third variation multiplies rather than adds, and it multiplies the work as well as the combinations.

  • Multiply before you build. Sizes times colours times the third attribute. If that number is over 2,500, the listing will not hold. If the number of combinations you want to price separately is over 400, you have a pricing problem rather than a listing problem.
  • Put the price bearing attribute first in your thinking. If only size changes your cost, keep size as the priced dimension and let the other two ride on the base price. That keeps you well under 400.
  • Do not add a third variation to a listing that is already large. A listing sitting comfortably under the 4,900 ceiling can breach 2,500 the moment you add a third dimension.
  • Ask whether it should be a variation at all. Personalisation, add ons and made to order details often belong in Etsy's Custom options rather than in a variation. Variations are for things you stock, not things you do.
  • Only offer what you can make on a bad week. This has not changed. Three variations makes it easier to promise a combination you have never actually built.

Frequently asked questions

Is the third variation available to everyone?
Yes. Etsy announced on 25 August 2026 that it is available to all sellers, and the Help page has been updated to match.

Do my existing listings change?
No. Listings with one or two variation types keep the 4,900 combination limit. The 2,500 limit applies to listings that use three.

Can I price every combination separately?
Only up to 400 of them. That cap covers unique or country specific prices, SKUs and quantities.

Why does every guide still say two?
Because the feature was announced, paused in May 2026 and then shipped in late August. Pages written in between were accurate when published and have not been revisited.

Should I rebuild my listings now?
Only where the two variation limit was genuinely forcing you into duplicate listings. If you split one product across two listings purely to get a third dimension, that is now worth consolidating.
